Emily Recommends

Emily is one of our booksellers by night and a "little school" teacher by day.

I am a bedtime reader, reading as much as I can before falling asleep each night. That being said, I never like anything too serious, sad, or scary that would keep me up. I'll read anything that I could talk to my girlfriends about and generally I have a strict 300 page policy. At this point, I won't even crack a book if its over 300 pages because it would just take me too darn long to finish and I'd be bored before I got to the end.

"This story finds its main character, Cora Seaborne, by the bedside of her somewhat vicious and now dying husband. It is 19th century England and Cora is a woman about to discover true independence of mind, spirit, and body for the first time. Her newfound freedom leads her to the coast in search of a mythical serpent said to be plaguing the country people. What she finds is a number of new friends, and an endless conflict between science and religion. Sarah Perry’s writing smacks of Jane Austen, but a darker layer is also present for those who enjoy gothic fiction."--Reviewed by Emily

"Follow the challenges and successes of an Irish Catholic family whose matriarch and patriarch came to America as teens in the 50’s. Leaving behind tradition and family, they built a life for themselves in the Boston area. The chapters bounce from past to present, revealing the roots of family secrets, and the repercussions of choices made long ago. Steeped in themes of what it is to be a Catholic in a modern world, family dysfunction, and the American dream."--Reviewed by Emily

"The time is World War I and British nurse Bess Crawford has sustained a mild injury at the front lines.  She is sent to Paris to recover away from the shelling. Despite orders to take it easy, Bess finds herself increasingly entangled in the identity and origins of a French soldier she once tended to.  You will like this book if you like mysteries by Alan Bradley or Martin Walker.  Instead of being gruesome or terrifying, it leaves you puzzling over facts.  Readers don’t need to be familiar with the characters from previous Bess Crawford mysteries to enjoy this one."--Reviewed by Emily

A short tale but one worth telling of the infamous Mata Hari. Known almost exclusively for being accused of espionage during WWI, her short life was much more than that. Based on letters written in her final days, this latest work by Paulo Coelho comes at a time when strong women like Mata Hari are celebrated.  In the book her character even states that she was born in the wrong time.  Her thirst for freedom and independence would have helped her flourish in 2017.  Unfortunately, these traits worked against her from her birth in 1876 to her death by execution in 1917.

"I could not put this down! This book is geared towards 10 and up and I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone younger than that. There is action,
adventure, a little bit of love, friendship, magic, and it all swirls around an ancient and mysterious island myth. The story moves quickly which keeps the reader reading and the heroine on her toes. If there were a sequel, I would read it in a heartbeat."--Reviewed by Emily

"The last in the Quinn family trilogy, this was my favorite. I will miss these characters! Hilderbrand keeps readers on their toes with surprises around
every corner. She ties up any loose ends from books one and two in a neat little Christmas bow. She continues to provide a perfect replica of a small New England town. Touching down in both Block Island and New York City in this latest work, she proves her ability to weave a story away from Nantucket. I left the book feeling genuinely happy for all members of the story and definitely in the holiday spirit."--Reviewed by Emily

Who is the real enemy? Will middle school ever be the same for these kids and their teachers?  With a little bit of mystery and a lot of action, this reader can’t wait for the next book."--Reviewed by Emily

"From first chapter to last this book made me laugh out loud. What it didn’t do was mimic many other comedians first books with pure fluff. There is
substance and grit in these pages. Schumer tackles some tough and important topics like domestic abuse, childhood poverty, and consent. She retraces her steps to success and the people who helped get her where she is today. If you like her now for her blunt unladylike commentary, you’ll walk away loving her for her family values and introverted personal life."--Reviewed by Emily

"This novel, translated from Japanese by Kalau Almony, is a thrilling, dark, crime novel. It follows Yurika, a seductive thief of sorts who pretends to be a prostitute while stealing incriminating photos of high powered men in Tokyo. Who she works for she isn’t exactly sure but they pay her large sums of money for her expertise and her silence. Having grown up in an orphanage and not made many connections in adulthood, Yurika is a lone wolf. Her life suddenly turns a dark corner when she runs into someone from her past and none of her clever, sneaky skills can hide her from one of the most powerful underworld bosses in Japan. At times jarring to read, this one will make your heart race."--Reviewed by Emily

Now they find themselves middle aged, seriously adulting, and raising teens of their own. The characters are real enough to feel like someone your own family might see around the neighborhood, if your neighborhood were an up and coming corner of Brooklyn. "Set against the backdrop of rural Pennsylvania, the story of Wolf Hollow could really have taken place in any country town in the USA during the 1940s.  Over seas, World War II rages on, but in this small farm community the bombing couldn’t seem farther away.  Eleven year old Annabelle suddenly has her hands full when a terrible accident occurs outside the schoolhouse one afternoon.  It’s a mystery that needs solving and she’s sure that the new bully in town, Betty, has everything to do with it.  But how is she connected to Toby, the silent WWI vet living in a shack in the woods?  And will the truth change what happened to poor Ruth?"--Reviewed by Emily

"As in her National Bestseller Winter People (2014), McMahon has seamlessly blended the genres of mystery and thriller with haunting supernatural forces. This novel uses some of the same elements that made its predecessor such a captivating read while conveying a vastly different story. McMahon binds readers to the story from the get-go with a slightly gruesome opener, an idyllic New England town, and a fictionalized local history that feels instantly authentic. This book is well suited for those kick-starting their mystery reading. While the thrill of the plot might keep readers up at night, the story always falls quickly back into the realm of the supernatural before becoming terribly scary."--Reviewed by Emily

"These may be just the right short stories for readers who typically gravitate towards novels or longer pieces. Each chapter is a crisp, thought provoking commentary on what it means to be a housewife in the traditional American sense. Ellis spins her housewife characters into hilarious, chilling, brave, and real women. Don’t miss my favorites, “How to be a Grown Ass Lady” with its advice for life and “How to be a Patron of the Arts” about becoming yourself when you’re already a grown up. Fans of Kaling’s first book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? will undoubtedly be excited to see this most recent collection of essays. Her
first book laid out her roots so fans could see where she was coming from and how she got her career off the ground. This next installment promises to offer insight into her current life including her thoughts on relationships, careers, friendship, body image, and on finding contentment. Kaling’s charm is in her smart sense of humor and ability to make readers feel like they are her pals,
