Come in and celebrate Independent Bookstore Day with us on Saturday, April 29th!
11:00 a.m. to 11:30am - Join us for Story Time
1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. - Guest Bookseller Annie Hartnett, author of Rabbit Cake, would love to tell you about some of her favorite book recommendations!
4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. - Author Event with Abigail Brooks - The Ways Women Age
What is it like to be a woman growing older in a culture where you cannot go to the doctor, open a magazine, watch television, or surf the internet without encountering products and procedures that are designed to make you look younger? The women’s stories in this book are personal biographies that explore identity and body image and are reflexively shaped by beauty standards, expectations of femininity, and an increasingly normalized climate of cosmetic anti-aging intervention. The Ways Women Age offers a critical perspective on how women respond to 21st century expectations of youth and beauty.
Abigail T. Brooks is Director of the Women's Studies Program and Assistant Professor of Sociology at Providence College.
6:00 p.m to 8:00 p.m. - Crash Course on the Short Story with Annie Hartnett
A writing workshop with Annie Hartnett of Grub Street - Annie currently teaches classes on the novel and the short story at Grub Street, an independent writing center in Boston. In this two-hour crash course, we'll talk about the basic elements of the short story. You'll learn about characters, setting, point of view, and about what we really want from the good ol' beginning, middle and end. We'll look at examples of short stories to inspire us and there will be in-class writing exercises. Please bring a laptop or a notebook. This workshop is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is required at Eventbright.
