Staff Reviews

"This book is such a charming play on the story of Little Red Riding Hood. In this case, the wolf is ‘Wolfie,’  i.e., a ginger cat, who follows Red on a quest. The goal? Deliver cake to grandma. There are no words, and the structure feels like a graphic novel. However, you won’t have trouble understanding the story, since Barbara Lehman’s figures are wonderfully expressive, colorful, and appealing. As Wolfie follows Little Red throughout the town, they pass by various fairy-tale themed businesses and characters. Lehman has even incorporated a game of counting Bo-Peep’s sheep, and the appendix provides a great overview of fairy tales and nursery rhymes. This book is perfect not only for the budding graphic novel reader but also for the child new to traditional fairy tales and nursery rhymes."  Age 6-9--Reviewed by Cristina

Description

A highly visual fractured-fairy-tale retelling of Little Red Riding Hood (and a cat who loves cake) from Caldecott Honor–winner Barbara Lehman. With simple picture bubbles and pictograms, this is perfect for budding graphic novel readers.

Little Red has baked a cake with their father, and is on the way to Grandma's house to make a delivery. But someone has been trailing them ever since they left home . . . someone who really loves cake.

This playful retelling of a beloved classic is a visual delight, with references to other fairy tales hidden throughout Lehman's inviting illustrations. Master of the wordless picture book, Lehman tells a rich story using only pictures, perfect for teaching visual literacy and for budding graphic novel enthusiasts.

★ "Inventive....hilarious....Lehman fills the spreads with information and diversion: there are hidden sheep to find, nursery rhyme characters to identify...and a nursery rhyme newspaper on the endpapers to read. Yet there’s no excess busy-ness—the Caldecott Honoree’s clean, clear lines offer a sense of structured calm."Publishers Weekly, STARRED review

★ "Inventive...Lehman offers entrancing details for keen-eyed viewers to notice....Another triumph from a master of wordless picture books." Horn Book, STARRED review

"This gentle, humorous take on Little Red Riding Hood incorporates numerous references to nursery rhymes, folktales, and fairy tales....Endpapers drawn to look like a newspaper, along with a map on the back cover, foreshadow Little Red’s route and alert readers to the many literary references to be found along the way. Comic-style illustrations employ a mix of panel sizes to keep the narrative moving. While the story itself is wordless, signs on the businesses and nursery rhyme excerpts in the back matter provide an additional layer of humor to the framework of Little Red’s journey."Booklist

"An indulgence for Mother Goose die-hards."Kirkus
