"In her third YA novel, Emiko Jean recontextualizes The Princess Diaries and the trope of undiscovered royalty in Asian and Asian-American contexts. Izumi, however, is hardly princess material in the traditional sense: she is spunky, sarcastic, and not one to follow rules. Though Jean crafts a light-hearted modern fairy tale, she also includes profound and relatable reflections on what it means to be a hyphenated American.
