This is an atmospheric, haunting novel of Linda, who is raised in the last vestiges of a hippy commune in northern Minnesota. From her cold barren home Linda trains her binoculars on a home in the distance, and becomes obsessed with a family that lives on the lake. What follows is a story of choices and consequences. Written beautifully with so much tension, I couldn’t put it down.

Everyone Brave Is Forgiven Cover Image
$24.29
ISBN: 9781501124372

Published: Simon & Schuster - May 3rd, 2016

Everyone Brave is Forgiven is a historical fiction drama, set during the first years of World War 2, that follows Mary North and Alistair Heath from 1939 to 1942.  Alistair enlists, while Mary wants to become a spy, but is instead appointed as a teacher by the government, much to her dismay.  They attempt to maintain a long-distance relationship through Alistair’s deployment and Mary’s job.  The story alternates between the well-known Battle of Britain and the heroic defense of Malta, a lesser-known stand against the Nazis that earned the island’s whole population the George Cross.  The transitions between the subplots were smooth and I never had trouble keeping on top of the action.  The novel presents fleshed-out and engaging characters, even if it sticks to the tried-and-true side of historical fiction.  Even the most ardent World War II buff can find plenty to enjoy here, especially with the focus on one of the less publicized battles of the war.

An historical coming-of-age story of Annabell, a precocious twelve year old who may remind you a bit of Scout. With her quiet sense of decency, Annabell is at the center of this compelling book that examines bullies and bigotry. A “hauntingly” original story good for middle grade boys and girls-I would definitely consider this a keeper! This is Lauren Wolk’s first book for young adults and hopefully the first of many.

"Bloom is a fairy, who lives in the castle and keeps it up and running with her magic. Because she is a rather unorthodox fairy, she clomps about with mud on her feet and vines trailing. The castle people are tired of her mess and she is tired of their complaints. So, she leaves without a glance. Without her magic, soon the castle is in disrepair. With
whimsical water color illustrations, Bloom shows that the power of being humble and kind with a bit of mud and joy thrown in can show what a perfectly ordinary girl can do!"

"Having written The Pope and Mussolini and The Pope Against the Jews, Kertzer certainly knows his popes. The subject of his latest book is Pope Pius IX, the last pope to reign over the Papal States. Revolution is erupting in Europe and Pius is caught between the Italian people (who want a uni ed Italy) and the more conservative authorities who want things to stay as they are. Kertzer is able to weave a riveting tapestry of political intrigue, religion, papal authority, freedom, monarchs, tradition, and the great Giuseppe Garibaldi. Pius himself is a compelling  gure who would rather think about the Immaculate Conception than the future of Italy. This is an absorbing account of a momentous time in European history."--Reviewed by Chris

"Edward Achorn, author of Fifty-Nine in ‘84, takes us on another trip through the world of baseball in the 1880s. This book focuses on a group of teams known as the American Association.

The St. Louis Browns (later the Cardinals), the Philadelphia Athletics, the Louisville Eclipse, and the Columbus Buckeyes were just a few of the clubs formed to counter the more elite National League (which, at the time, was dominated by the Boston Red Stockings!). The association was jeeringly referred to as the “Beer and Whiskey Circuit” because the owners were often brewers and distillers who created the teams to have a place to sell more alcohol.

Ahorn introduces us an array of fascinating figures from the time like Moses “Fleet “ Walker, an African-American who was considered the finest catcher in the league. One of my favorites is Dan “Jumping Jack” Jones, a Yale student whose unusual pitching style made him a laughingstock with fans until he began striking out their best hitters. This is the perfect spring read for fans of history or baseball."

Miss Moore Thought Otherwise is a fantastic new picture book about Anne Carroll Moore. Born in Limerick, Maine in 1871, the independent-minded Anne learned about the world by reading her father’s books. She began to resent the fact that children weren’t allowed in libraries and children’s books were often scarce and poorly written. So Miss Moore decided to change all that. She became a pioneer of children’s library services.

Eventually, she would establish (and design) the Central Children’s Room at the New york Public Library. What a wonderful thing it is to have such a well written and illustrated book about a woman who cared so much for children’s literature.

"Michael Ondaatje (The English Patient, Anil’s Ghost) has given us a great gift with this novel. Set in England in 1945, it is a tale of suspense and intrigue, told by Nathaniel in flashback. Two teens are placed in the care of a guardian of dubious honor. Their parents offer a simple explanation for leaving them behind, which proves to just be a cover. A fascinating view of children who realize their parents exist outside of the home and have complex and unknowable lives, the teens go on to have their own version of life without parents (for a while). "Dashiell Hammett was the creator of some of the most famous American detectives of the early 20th century, including Sam Spade and Nick Charles. But it was his creation of the epitome of the hard-boiled detective-the Continental Op-that really made me fall in love with Hammett’s storytelling. The unnamed narrator of over 20 stories and two novels, the Continental Op is the workman behind the Pinkerton Detective Agency. Robbery, arson, missing persons and murder are all cases for the detective-and this collection has them all! Written originally in the 1920’s and 30’s, this is a great introduction to the fantastic world of Dashiell Hammett!"--Reviewed by Jennifer

"On the surface, The Wanderers is a tale of three astronauts and their preparations for the mission that will take them to Mars.  But Meg
Howrey’s fantastic novel is so much more than that.  It is the tale of relationships and of what is real or imagined.  Spending seventeen months in a realistic simulation, astronauts Helen Kane, Sergei Kuznetsov and Yoshihiro Tanaka each bring a special strength to their mission, and each one also leaves behind a loved one.  From the daily tasks to the emergency maneuvers aboard the simulator, the astronauts must be prepared for anything that may occur in the ultimate trip to Mars.  Told in the alternating voices of astronauts and family, it is the story of discovery and despair, hopefulness and wonder."--Reviewed by Jennifer

"Traveling home to Richmond, VA for his mother’s wedding, dysfunctional college professor Edwin Stith gets wrapped up in the dysfunction of his soon-to-be step family, his former friends and lovers.  And to make matters worse, his student/lover may be on her way too.  Edwin is our charming, bumbling Unreliable narrator.  It’s impossible to separate fact from fantasy in Edwin’s mind-and that’s part of the macabre fun of Lee Irby’s latest novel.  Set amidst the glorious/faded history of the south, Irby makes the locale as much a part of the story as the characters themselves.  A swiftly paced tale that takes place over just one weekend, you will finish the book, think about it for a while, then go pick it back up again. "spill simmer falter wither is Sara Baume’s beautifully written first novel. Dysfunctional human Ray impulsively connects with rescue dog One Eye. The man-dog relationship allows Ray to finally see his life for what it is-living in the shadow of a long-dead, uncaring father. Man and dog are forced to flee when One Eye attacks another dog and they set off on a rambling road trip. Baume’s prose is constructed in such a way that we are never sure if Ray is speaking to One Eye or to us-and this is the magic of great storytelling."--Reviewed by Jennifer

"A welcome addition to the Scandinavian mystery genre, I’m Traveling Alone is by Samuel Bjork (pen name of Norwegian novelist/playwright/musician Frode Sander Oien). A tense thriller with remarkably real (and really flawed) characters, the story narrative is driven by events of the past. Main characters Holger Munch and Mia Kruger are at the center of the investigation and (try) not to let their personal issues get in the way. I’m hopeful that this is just the beginning of an amazing series featuring the Oslo homicide unit."--Reviewed by Jennifer

A fantastic way to introduce children to an early love of history and biography, complimented by Eliopoulos’ charming illustrations. Best for ages 5-8."--Reviewed by Jennifer

"This is the ninth book in Cotterill’s great series starring Dr. Siri, the elderly coroner of Laos. Dr. Siri’s mysticism consistently gets him entangled in mysteries, his friends and occasional ghosts get in his way and the secrets of his country keep him on his toes (and wrapped up in red tape).

The latest novel revolves around the well-kept secrets of his wife’s past and a clairvoyant who has risen from them dead. Set in a turbulent time in Laos history, Cotterill seamlessly mixes his stories with the history of this fascinating country."--Reviewed by Jennifer
