We ask that you please read the FAQs before filling out the form at the bottom of this page. Thank you!

Gift Certificate FAQs:

1. Can I use a gift certificate online?

Yes! Although our gift certificates are traditional (i.e., paper copies filled out by hand) you may use them online as long as they have not already been redeemed. Simply put the gift certificate number and amount in the comments of your order.

Please note: Our system requires you to enter a debit or credit card even if you have a gift certificate. You will not be charged if the gift certificate covers the total amount.

2. Help! I have a gift certificate, but I've still been charged for my online order! What do I do?

Have no fear! You haven't been charged. In some cases, you may see what is actually a "pending charge" on your billing statement when you first place your order, but it will not be finalized. Finalization can only be done by Books on the Square's staff when we process your order.

This pending charge is an authorization confirming your account's existence and typically disappears within a few days depending on the speed of the financial institution associated with the card.

If you have any questions about billing or a suspicious charge, please do not hesitate to contact us.

3. Can I purchase or use a gift certificate by phone?

Yes! Please call us at 401-331-9097 to complete the transaction.

4. If I purchase a gift certificate online, how does the recipient get it?

Good question! You have a few options:

  • You may pick up the gift certificate to give the recipient as you would with any paid online order. Just let us know when you arrive at the store that you've ordered a gift certificate online.

  • We can mail the gift certificate on your behalf through USPS. Our online ordering system will automatically generate a shipping charge. We do not charge for mailing gift certificates, and this pending charge will be removed when we process and finalize your order.

  • We can keep the gift certificate in the store for the recipient to pick up at their convenience. All they have to do is let us know they've been gifted a certificate. It will be stored under their name.

5. Do gift certificates expire?

Only after they are redeemed. We still have unused gift certificate stubs from 30 years ago!

6. Help! I have a gift certificate that has not been redeemed, but it is lost! Can I still use it?

Yes! At the time of purchase, we fill out and save the stub attached to the gift certificate with the purchase date, denomination, and basic information on the recipient and giver (just names!). We are happy to search through our archived stubs to confirm your gift certificate has not been redeemed.

If you know you have a lost gift certificate prior to your visit, we ask that you please give us a call ahead of time to let us know. This allows us to search through our physical records ahead of time rather than keep you waiting at the checkout counter! If you are placing an online order with a lost gift certificate, please indicate the approximate purchase date, denomination, and basic information in the order comments and we'll do our best to recover it.
